FOR THE LOVE OF: POUL KJAERHOLM

kjærholm is one of my favorite danish designers. maybe one of my favorite designers. period. all of us have seen, lusted and lived with his beautiful design through our lifetimes and someday i will surprise myself with a birthday present and bring a piece of poul home.

kjærholm was a skilled carpenter and completed his education at the danish school of arts and crafts under the brilliant hans wegner. he worked at fritz hansen, another absolute favorite for about a year where he created some very well known chair prototypes. after three years of study wegner assigned kjærholm for a project in which he, among other things, developed a lounge chair. this chair was later exhibited and got attention from søren hansen, at that time director of Fritz Hansen. The director, on advice from wegner, hired kjærholm. however, kjaerholm left after less than a year due to a dispute over the production of his work. there is an anecdote connected to kjærholm leaving his work with fritz hansen. the anecdote says that kjærholm offered fritz hansen a plywood molded chair to which fritz hansen said that they already had a plywood chair, namely the ant chair by jacobsen. According to the story, kjærholm then said that they had to choose between the two chairs. fritz hansen replied to this with something in the line of: “your chair is nice, but we already made the mold for the other chair, therefore Goodbye and Good luck”- source

after fritz hansen, kjærholm joined the manufacturer ejvind kold christensen. the colab continued until kjærholm's death in 1980. 'In 1982, fritz hansen took over the production and sales of "The Kjærholm Collection", developed from 1951 to 1967, designs, which are logical to the minute detail with an aura of exclusivity. In 2007 fritz hansen added two new pieces to the kjærholm collection. Pieces that were never in production before, the pk8™ side chair and pk58™ dining table'. each of his furniture pieces are labeled with the initials pk followed by a number from a series. his work has often been described as 'modest in means, rich in expression. Unlike his Scandinavian contemporaries, who worked primarily in wood, Kjærholm revered the properties of steel and used it as his construction material of choice. His resulting works are undeniably understated and elegant, with an emphasis on clean lines and remarkable attention to detail.

i am forever obsessed by the absolute magic that happens with the perfect marriage between kjærholm's minimalistic frame structures and the clean blend of the materials. here i share with you some of my favorite works of art by dear ol' kjærholm. the pk9 has my name written all over it.

you know when you come across something, and you get the feeling you two were meant for each other. that is the feeling i got when i came across the beauty of the line of ceramics created by australian ceramist jane kelsey at dot&co.

yes, i can be over dramatic at times but i take black and white ceramics very seriously, especially when they are this simple, graphic and beautiful. all of the gorgeous ceramics are unique and made by hand using a range of processes and mediums to create unique pieces of art. her ceramics include a range of vases, planters, beautiful woodblock prints, dishes and the most gorgeous spoons known to mankind.

I DREAM OF POM POMS

i can never walk away from anything that comes with pom poms attached. ever. specially if the pompoms come with snug-ly black and white throws in stripes. how is a lady to say no? muima brings to you beautiful accessories for your home that include pompom wool blankets, thick crochet floor cushions and gorgeous Moroccan wool rugs in gorgeous black and white and beautiful saturated colors. the vintage pillow you see below is cut from an old handira and each piece is unique. drool much?

STUDIO ESINAM PRINTS

 as you know, i am currently obsessing over anything that was born/made/thought of in the country called sweden. and i do love a good print. add to that a graphic architectural detail and you have made hena a very happy person. studio esinam is a graphic studio based in goteborg and they create fabulous stories through their unique graphics and characters which define the sense of space they portray in their work. i feel their prints are not literal but the interpretation of the artist who saw certain aspects of the city or space in a very unique way. i wonder what i would create if i were to define a certain landscape into something abstract. maybe that can be on my "to do" summer list along with "draw saad's portrait". i digress. their drawings are a study of facades and details of buildings and spaces we might have seen but in these prints you get a sense of paired down simplicity. and what beautiful, crisp styling.

  their work is divided into three sections: stories, prints and space. in the own words below.

prints

in our first print series elevations, we seek to capture the unique feeling of various cities around the world. cities that most of us have some kind of relation to, but probably haven’t seen in the format of the architectural drawing. by studying the façades, directing attention to details that mostly pass unnoticed, we hope to touch upon qualities to the architecture that contribute to the specific feeling the city imposes on you. when working with this series we try to let the craftsmanship of the drawing itself be the creative drive,allowing for new perspectives to arise along the way. Not so much working with intellectual concepts of what we think about the city, but rather just freely exploring one aspect of it, in this case its façade.the prints can be purchased in our web shop or through retailers around the world.

stories

in this section we explore interesting spaces and buildings around us through short stories. the first story will be posted in june 2014. Every new story will focus on a different aspect of space and architecture.

SERVE IT RIGHT

this gorgeous bolling table, designed by hans bolling in 1963 became an icon for modernist danish design. i see myself lounging by it with my book and an ice cold dry cucumber soda. it is my favorite summer drink. you can maybe sip on an iced tea with lemon or maybe a cold cold beer and some spicy wasabi snacks. so id be sipping my soda, reading my book and stroking my new dog on a perfect summer day. just so you know, the dog only exists in my mind as of now. but i look forward to the snuggles at some point soon. i digress. this table is confident and smart and will be a perfect companion to any kind of chair or sofa. the tray can be used on its own as well and is sold separately by the company. it is reversible and can be flipped to add color and contrast with tons of personality and the frame can be folded flat and stored away without use of any tools. not that anyone would ever want to put away this beauty. what a practical and charming addition to my make believe shopping list.

brdr. krüger is a danish family-run company which was started when two brothers theodor and ferdinand krüger established a wood turning shop in Copenhagen in 1886. ‘brdr.’ is an abbreviation of ‘brødrene’ which is Danish for brothers. Five generations and over 125 years later, the business continues to flourish, working in partnership with architects and designers to craft pieces that continue to amaze. Buy this and more here
