DOT & CO

Monday, December 15, 2014

you know when you come across something, and you get the feeling you two were meant for each other. that is the feeling i got when i came across the beauty of the line of ceramics created by australian ceramist jane kelsey at dot&co.

yes, i can be over dramatic at times but i take black and white ceramics very seriously, especially when they are this simple, graphic and beautiful. all of the gorgeous ceramics are unique and made by hand using a range of processes and mediums to create unique pieces of art. her ceramics include a range of vases, planters, beautiful woodblock prints, dishes and the most gorgeous spoons known to mankind.

i hope to find a local retailer that might be carrying these ceramics in the u.s but until then you can purchase her creations on her online store here.

have a wonderful rest of the week!

COLOR ON THE WALL

Friday, December 12, 2014

marsala 1814-38 is the pantone color of the year."marsala is a subtly seductive shade, one that draws us in to its embracing warmth. says leatrice eiseman, executive director pantone color institute.  "much like the fortified wine that gives marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal, while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness. this hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors."

as of now kids, i dont know how i feel about this hue yet. i would personally not wear it in any shape or size. but its warmth and earthiness could create an enveloping feeling in the space it is used in. it would have to be brought into an interior with careful consideration. very very carefully. it borders between a rustic brown and the deep deep berry and i see it working well with gorgeous teals and deep blues. i did see some hilarious descriptions of what marsala 1814-38 makes people think of and most of them were not complimentary. but, lets keep an open mind because color is one of the most subjective associations and there is no accounting for taste.

the color does remind me of the beauty and deep hue of the black dahlia and i see the flower in high demand in 2015. here are some images i have gathered from around the web where marsala seems to be working its warm magic.

NOVEMBER MOVEMBER

Tuesday, November 4, 2014

where has the time gone? i know i have been missing in all the action but fall and halloween and freinds/family visiting with work, steaming hot chocolates, biking the city before sun rise and sun rise at the lake has taken over my days and nights. but here i am again.

it's november. my fav time of the year for a lot many reasons. one of them being movember, which means men with facial hair show up all over. "movember is the global men’s health charity where men grow and women support the mustache during november and become part of the official movement to change the face of men’s health. movember is about bringing back the moustache (mo), having fun, creating conversations and awareness, and raising funds for men's health, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems." mo bros take action by changing their appearance by growing a mustache for the 30 days of movember, to spark conversation and raise funds. mo sistas commit to supporting the men in their lives while helping to promote men’s health. having said all that, i will say not all men can support a mo. i have woken up from nightmares where men with mos are chasing me down michigan avenue. but, how about supporting a beard for bovember. see what i did there? bo-vember. cheeky hena. the rules clearly state no beards or goatees for the movember movement so this may be my spin on movember because this girl has got a weak spot for hipster beards. here are the official rules for the movember, you can find all you need to before you start growing that facial hair.

talking of men's facial hair, here are some of my favorites. i will start with the beautiful paul newman in his bearded glory. and then there is ben dalhaus. why? because.

"knowledge is power. prevention is everything. early detection is key." learn about the health issues men face and how movember is having an impact on men’s health here.

have a great rest of the week.

HOSTEL OF DREAMS

Thursday, August 21, 2014

architect and designer felipe hess dreamed up this little dream of a hostel with his long time friend guilherme perez, who he has known for 15 years. 'we' hostel in sao paulo, brazil carries the relaxed traditions of hostels from all over the world, but brings the comfort, refinement and attention to detail of boutique hotels. converted from a mansion of nearly 4000 sq feet from the early 1900s, most of the original architectural features were preserved and played an important part in the design development. hess has used a quirky mix of carefully curated collection of furniture found in flea markets in and around san paulo which were then restored and updated by the designer, adding a vintage character to the contemporary design.

the design of the hostel has been kept simple with crisp white walls and black accents. the tv room has a chalkboard ceiling where travelers from all over the world leave messages. the bathrooms are colors blocked in fun blue, red, yellow or green and the bedrooms open to patio spaces which give guests a chance to socialize and unwind with drinks and delicious fare. graphics by the artist rodrigo marangoni are featured through the house and include neighborhood maps and mix tapes. there is a gorgeous lounging/reading room that comes fully stocked with books galore and cheerful furniture, inviting the weary traveler to put their feet up and loose themselves in a good book or the beautiful view.

it's definitely on my list for places to stay if we make it to that part of the world in the very near future. i hope saad opens this entry fast and gets the hint because we still have time to make it there for my birthday. meanwhile, you can look, book and enjoy the "we" hostel here.

IT'S A MAN'S WORLD

Monday, July 14, 2014

well, not really. but entering  into isle of man sure makes me want to grow a beard, chew on my bike tires and spit all over the place. do guys really do that anymore? moving on. isle of man is owned by arthur holstein who is also the creative director of this little gem of a place. i love the display of clothes and accessories which are all juxtaposed with vintage editions of the playboy magazine and some super cool mantiques- vintage trunks, trophies, bar ware and retro signage."When the word ‘man-tiques’ was thrown around, Arthur’s gears started grinding and IOM was born. A man of many talents and interests and adventures, he is the embodiment of the Isle of Man man. When he’s not racing motorcycles or hunting doves in Argentina, he spends his days curating the exact components that make Isle of Man so full of character. He is, to say the least, the purveyor of cool".

i love the collection of lighting and accessories isle of man carries. they all have a very unique, industrial character and would fit perfectly in a bachelor pad. they would fit beautifully in any space, really. art director michael s. jones creates creative and inventive installations and also creates all the lighting fixtures and custom furnishings seen in the shop. pure love.

i did buy saad a gorgeous sweater from there beginning of year and he loved it. next, i have my eye on a gorgeous lamp which i might add to my "things to get hena on her birthday" list i have going for him. always being helpful here. they have luxurious custom lines of clothing and fragrances made for "men of character". so grab that george clooney in your life and head on over to man of isle and get your fix. there are some awesome vintage stores in the same block as well, full of little treasures. enjoy!

have an awesome week!

STUDIO ESINAM PRINTS

Thursday, June 12, 2014

as you know, i am currently obsessing over anything that was born/made/thought of in the country called sweden. and i do love a good print. add to that a graphic architectural detail and you have made hena a very happy person. studio esinam is a graphic studio based in goteborg and they create fabulous stories through their unique graphics and characters which define the sense of space they portray in their work. i feel their prints are not literal but the interpretation of the artist who saw certain aspects of the city or space in a very unique way. i wonder what i would create if i were to define a certain landscape into something abstract. maybe that can be on my "to do" summer list along with "draw saad's portrait". i digress. their drawings are a study of facades and details of buildings and spaces we might have seen but in these prints you get a sense of paired down simplicity. and what beautiful, crisp styling.

their work is divided into three sections: stories, prints and space. in the own words below.

prints
in our first print series elevations, we seek to capture the unique feeling of various cities around the world. cities that most of us have some kind of relation to, but probably haven’t seen in the format of the architectural drawing. by studying the façades, directing attention to details that mostly pass unnoticed, we hope to touch upon qualities to the architecture that contribute to the specific feeling the city imposes on you. when working with this series we try to let the craftsmanship of the drawing itself be the creative drive, allowing for new perspectives to arise along the way. Not so much working with intellectual concepts of what we think about the city, but rather just freely exploring one aspect of it, in this case its façade.the prints can be purchased in our web shop or through retailers around the world.

stories
in this section we explore interesting spaces and buildings around us through short stories. the first story will be posted in june 2014. Every new story will focus on a different aspect of space and architecture.

the studio was founded by art director and architect duo Josefine Lilljegren and Sebastian Gokah
in the spring of 2013. see more here!

i hope you all are enjoying this gorgeous (cool) summer weather.
have a great weekend!

CALIFORNIA NIGHTS

Tuesday, May 27, 2014

ahh california nights...no, i am not talking about spending lazy nights in monterey by the beach. california nights is a monthly neighborhood gathering of beautiful, fun people and a fabulous vintage crawl which starts from augusta and ends around division. all the people buzzing around seem to know each other but if you are not from the neighborhood and love vintage furniture, old books, clothes and colorful pop up shops, good tunes and sipping wine, you will fit right in. starting off you pay $5 for a "cup" of wine which bears the california nights logo which will be your ticket to get a refill for beer or wine at all the stores you stop by.

we started the evening at the arborist, with its gorgeous vintage finds including a bench which would be perfect for the foot of my bed if my bedroom was 5' longer. Sigh. I still visit the page to see if it is gone. and it is still there. calling my name. the price was so good. i wake up in cold sweat in the middle of night thinking of that price and that bench. maybe i should buy a storage space just so i dont have to let these dreamy vintage deals pass me by. sigh- moving on, i bought a gorgeous black & white mask there and enjoyed some tunes and talked to a few lovely people. outside, there was a small group of budding stars playing the violin. their ages ranged from 4-10 year old. what a treat. next door was the fun shop vintage quest, which is named just right! it's like you walked in to someone's great aunt martha who just happened to be a hoarder. we spent a good amount of time looking through old records , old black and white photos, a collections of shot glasses from michigan state, old lock boxes from US mail, old books, and a vast intriguing collection of sorts that could keep you busy for a few hours. nirvana playing on the record player, i tried on a few hats and went on to the counter to play for the records. the owner is one sweet guy who made everyone roll a couple of dice to figure what the discount would be. ours was 11%. score. what a fun place!

after stopping at other shops, our last stop was humbolt house. an eclectic vintage store filled with a bohemian and mid century vibe. i always love stopping by here. after drooling all over the assortment of kilims they have covering the space i spent a good half an hour checking out their new inventory which changes almost everyday. the collections vary in era but beauty and functionality is guaranteed with anything you see. the place is filled with beautiful textiles, modernist art, vintage housewares, my favorite was the wall mounted nutone stereo. i want me some!

participants include humboldt house, vintage quest, meadowlark, space oddities chicago, peanut gallery & the arborist along with several pop-up shops filled with vintage and boheme goodies. every 3rd saturday from 5-9pm between Augusta and Division on California Ave.

See you there!

TEA LOVE

Thursday, May 22, 2014

i am a tea lover, that is no surprise. but lately i have been drawn to earl grey and on reading/learning more about this particular tea, i discovered earl grey doesn't just have a unique taste, it also has a very wide range of health benefits. therefore, i was compelled to share my love with you all. the key ingredient to earl grey which gives it it's taste and benefits is bergamot. it belongs to the mint family and the rind of the fruit is used to extract the essential oils which are used for so many purposes.

pearly whites

now this one surprised me the most. i always thought/heard that tea, like coffee stains teeth. but i guess i can be wrong sometimes. i can almost feel saad rolling his eyes on this one. tea contains very high levels of catechins, a type of disease and infection fighting flavonoid and antioxidant, which adds to tea's health benefits. earl grey also contains fluoride in addition to tap water which is an additional cavity fighter. here's a tip: the longer you steep the tea, the more flavonoids you'll get in your brew. i personally find over steeped tea bitter but you get the picture.

digestion

earl grey (like most teas) improves digestion. what it does not do is erase signs of over loading on carbs, sodium and sugar. it is no miracle worker.  but it does aid in the digesting process and helps relieve painful indigestion, nausea and colic.

that darned cholesterol

earl grey tea contains bergamot extract which helps in reducing cholesterol and ldl levels while elevating the hdl (good cholesterol) level by 20%. over the centuries it has been used as protection for the heart and as an antiseptic for cuts and wounds. it also comes in a tablet form known as bergamet, which is mainly used to reduce bloody sugar levels when taken before a meal

stress and energy

the alpha pinene and limonene in bergamot are known for its anti-depressant properties. some studies show that the effect of the bergamot oil when it comes to depression, anxiety and stress is as good as the pharmaceutical drug diaphezam. Bergamot oil has also been used to naturally cure postpartum blues.

a study published in the journal Psychopharmacology by UCL, found that people who drank black tea were able to recover from a stressful events faster than people who drank a placebo tea. "in the study, 75 young male regular tea drinkers were split into two groups and monitored for six weeks. they all gave up their normal tea, coffee and caffeinated beverages, then one group was given a fruit-flavoured caffeinated tea mixture made up of the constituents of an average cup of black tea. the other group – the control group – was given a caffeinated placebo identical in taste, but devoid of the active tea ingredients. all drinks were tea-coloured, but were designed to mask some of the normal sensory cues associated with tea drinking (such as smell, taste and familiarity of the brew), to eliminate confounding factors such as the ‘comforting’ effect of drinking a cup of tea. both groups were subjected to challenging tasks, while their cortisol, blood pressure, blood platelet and self-rated levels of stress were measured. in one task, volunteers were exposed to one of three stressful situations (threat of unemployment, a shop lifting accusation or an incident in a nursing home), where they had to prepare a verbal response and argue their case in front of a camera. the tasks triggered substantial increases in blood pressure, heart rate and subjective stress ratings in both of the groups. In other words, similar stress levels were induced in both groups. however, 50 minutes after the task, cortisol levels had dropped by an average of 47 per cent in the tea drinking group compared with 27 per cent in the fake tea group." more here.

weight loss

i am not surprised to find weight loss as part of the benefits of this tea. the citrus extract is generally thought to help in weight loss along with a healthy diet and exercise (of coarse). add more lemon people. it is said to break down calories into food for your muscles and excess is released through your natural system.

 heart disease

UCL researchers also found that blood platelet activation – linked to blood clotting and the risk of heart attacks – was lower in the tea drinkers, and that the group trying out this theory reported a greater degree of relaxation in the recovery period after the task. dear people, this is good news. I am not saying this alone can be the cure for heart disease. rather, it is the smallest of drops of hope in the sea of heart prevention "techniques". along with a healthy (plant) based diet, exercise and de-stressing. Preventative Medicine published a study in 2012 which found that people who drank three cups of black tea daily dramatically lowered their blood triglyceride levels by 36 percent and increased the ‘good cholesterol’ HDL by 20 percent after three months. The participants also had increased levels of antioxidants, which fight against free radicals that damage your cells. if that wasnt enough, it also decreased fasting blood sugar levels by 18 percent. it also helps keep arteries open in people with elevated cholesterol, and a daily habit of about 5 cups per day may improve the function of blood vessel walls, allowing for improved dilation and blood flow.

now i will go and make me-self a lovely cup of earl grey and enjoy it with my imaginary dog pet.
drink on!

have a great rest of the week!

SERVE IT RIGHT

Tuesday, May 13, 2014

this gorgeous bolling table, designed by hans bolling in 1963 became an icon for modernist danish design. i see myself lounging by it with my book and an ice cold dry cucumber soda. it is my favorite summer drink. you can maybe sip on an iced tea with lemon or maybe a cold cold beer and some spicy wasabi snacks. so id be sipping my soda, reading my book and stroking my new dog on a perfect summer day. just so you know, the dog only exists in my mind as of now. but i look forward to the snuggles at some point soon. i digress. this table is confident and smart and will be a perfect companion to any kind of chair or sofa. the tray can be used on its own as well and is sold separately by the company. it is reversible and can be flipped to add color and contrast with tons of personality and the frame can be folded flat and stored away without use of any tools. not that anyone would ever want to put away this beauty. what a practical and charming addition to my make believe shopping list.

brdr. krüger is a danish family-run company which was started when two brothers theodor and ferdinand krüger established a wood turning shop in Copenhagen in 1886. ‘brdr.’ is an abbreviation of ‘brødrene’ which is Danish for brothers. Five generations and over 125 years later, the business continues to flourish, working in partnership with architects and designers to craft pieces that continue to amaze. Buy this and more here

drool on y'all!
